Job Summary

To provide expert counselling and education to patients, families, and healthcare professionals regarding genetic conditions, testing options, and results. To work together with the laboratory teams to ensure continuous improvement of genetics services.

Minimum Criteria Required

Masters degree in genetic counselling
Registration with the HPCSA

Experience

At least 2-3 years post-graduate experience in genetic counselling at a recognised institution/healthcare facility
Fluency in a second South African official language is advantageous.

Relevant Job Knowledge

Familiarity with data protection, patient privacy, and secure handling of genetic information
Understanding of ethical, legal, and psychosocial principles underpinning genetic counselling practice
Knowledge of application of genetic testing methodologies and their clinical relevance
Understanding of test utilisation principles, cost considerations, and reimbursement dynamics in private healthcare.
Familiarity with pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory processes within the practice
Knowledge of relevant professional guidelines and standards governing genetic testing and counselling practice.
Insight into clinical referral pathways and the role of genetic testing in patient management,
Understanding of ethical, legal, and psychosocial principles underpinning genetic counselling practice, including informed consent, confidentiality, and disclosure.
Strong understanding of human genetics and genomics.

Key Performance Areas

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide high-quality pre- and post-test genetic counselling to patients referred for genetic testing (booking of counselling sessions, referrals).
• Educate patients and clinicians on genetic conditions, inheritance patterns, recurrence risk for future pregnancies and appropriate test selection.
• Obtain and document informed consent in line with ethical, legal, and laboratory accreditation requirements.
• Interpret genetic test results in collaboration with the clinical geneticist and medical scientists, and communicate findings clearly to patients and referring healthcare providers.
• Prepare comprehensive clinical reports to ensure accurate, confidential record-keeping for patient follow-up as is prescribed in medical ethics, and accepted policies and procedures.
• Participate in clinical ward rounds and multidisciplinary meetings as and when required.
• Increase awareness of the genetic services available at Lancet Laboratories.
• Assist with growing market share in the genetic testing space through outreach activities, educational initiatives, and support of business development strategies, while maintaining clinical integrity.
• Remain compliant with regulatory and professional standards.
• Stay current with advances in genetics, genomics, and best practice guidelines relevant to private pathology services, with ongoing professional development in line with HPCSA requirements.
